Clearing Up the Confusion Between the Melchizedek and Levitical Priesthoods

This just in Torah Fans

Basically the Melchizedek Priesthood spanned from Adam to Moses (Rom 5:14) until the Gold Calf Covenant Break of Israel (Ex.32); thrusting the people into a Levitical Priesthood (Heb.7:11) – Until Yahweh re-established the Melchizedek Priesthood thru Yahshua (Ps.110:1-4 / Heb.7:20-24).

Rabbinic types will assert that Levi was given the priesthood long before the covenant at Sinai – sighting the Talmud, Mishnah, other writings and Gen.49:5. As stated; the best these Beyond Scripture / non-Torah writings can aspire to is commentary. Nothing can be above Torah – Nothing! Gen.49:5 is Torah; it reveals a curse on both Simeon and Levi for actions taken at Gen.34 involving both (only) Simeon and Levi – Now; ask yourself – Self; how can anyone split that verse (Gen.49:5) in half, wrench a priesthood (verbiage that is not there) for only Levi and cookie cut Simeon out of the picture?

So what we see at Ex.19:5-6 is Yahweh’s offer that if the people would keep the covenant, they would be His Kingdom of (Melchizedek) Priests. This was Plan ‘A’; that was lost with the Gold Calf incident of Ex.32 that thrust the Israelites into the Levitical Priesthood that was at best a damage control Plan ‘B’. There is a huge difference between being ‘a nation of priests’ and being ‘a nation with priests’. Most of the Hebrew Root Teachers teach the cyclical nature of Hebrew – that is; it cycles – if you want to know the future; look to the beginning.

Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

(‘change’ <metathesis> – a reversion back to)

We under Yahshua revert back to the original Melchizedek/Melkizedeq Priesthood Plan ‘A’. The same offer (of Ex.19:5-6) being identified at 1Ptr.2:9.

1Ptr 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;

Melek means King – Zedek means Righteous

  1. Dr. Dave – I’ve come across many in the Messianic and Hebrew Roots communities who believe that one must be a Levite in order to be a priest. This article is a clear explanation of how the priesthood again reverts to all the people, and not just a few.

Thank you for posting this. I look forward to more of your explanations.

    • Please tell me more about this! Also help me to understand the debate about the animal sacrifices being reinstated by YHVH, This troubles me on some levels and I want to know that my understanding is according to His Word! Thank you, Blessings and Shalom

      • The Melchizedek Priesthood (1Pt.2:9) is to the ‘first fruit’ Believers much like being to the ‘firstborn’ (Ex.13:2; 19:5-6; Num.3:12) and is a Spiritual Priesthood. I’m going out on a limb here – but it seems to me and is consistent with the text that during the millennial age surviving physical humans will be taught thru animal sacrifice once more conducted by Son’s of Aaron – However that does not include most of us – for we are not Levites let alone Son’s of Aaron – that also excludes Yahshua (Heb.11-14) for He was not a Levite. YHWH does have a plan for the Son’s of Aaron; but that does not include most of us – it does not include even most Levites who are not Son’s of Aaron or Son’s of Zadok (a line of Aaron)

      • Shalom – While it does appear that Yah does have a purpose for the Sons of Aaron/Zadok and in that a resurgence of animal sacrifice – unless you are a Livite this does not include you – Yet you are being called into the Melchizedek Priesthood (1Pt.2:9)

This is only my view – the resurgence of animal sacrifice seems to be a teaching tool for the host of people that never knew (that are not the firstfruits) and has to do with the Millennial earthly reign before haSatan is released to decisive for the short time (Rev.20:3).

  2. Interesting way to put that matter regarding Simon & Levi, that Jacob said he did not want his soul to partake of their secret regarding their lie to Shechem and the treacherous way they treated that whole tribe? Kinda makes yeh wonder how Yahweh really thought about that? Certainally Yahshuah or Joshua as the name was interpeted in the old testament, He knew that Yahweh expected us all to keep our word, and even after being decieved by the Hittites Joshuah kept the deal He had made with them.So while Yahweh might well have looked upon the treacherousness of Simon and Levi gracefully so as not to destroy them, certainally SImon and Levi seemed like they were not very truthful to Shechem, and of course the Levitical tribe fell from grace later on when they began extorting Israel in the days of Eli, and Yahweh lost patience with them for their evil ways then.

But then concerning the Melchizadek Priesthood? I do not think it spanned only from Adam to Moses, but I think remains in effect eternally? However the fact it operates in secret coupled with the fact that today there are those folks who claim that title whose claim may or may not be dubious, sorta confuses matters? There are a lotta folks claiming a lot of things these days, which in many cases are nowhere near the truth. But concerning the Melchizadek Priesthood, the real one, the scriptures say this…………….

    Psalms 110
    4. The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

    • Shalom Bill – Yes the the ‘plan A’ Melchizedek Priesthood spans from pre-Creation to re-Creation however the Israelites defiled themselves with the Gold Calf and were thrust into/under the ‘plan B’ Levitical Priesthood till the death and resurrection of Yahshua (Heb.7:11-28).

the ‘plan B’ Levitical Priesthood – a small umbrella under a much larger all encompassing umbrella; the ‘plan A’ Melchizedek Priesthood

      Yah’s Esteem

    • Shalom Bill

Quote you – “But then concerning the Melchizadek Priesthood? I do not think it spanned only from Adam to Moses, but I think remains in effect eternally?”

Correct – the Melchizedek Priesthood spans from pre-creation to re-creation it’s just that the Israelites made themselves ineligible w/ the covenant break of the gold calf (Ex.32) that thrust them into the Levitical Priesthood for the next 15 centuries until the death and resurrection of Yahshua.

      • Yeh we agree on that item, concerning the Melchizadek Priiesthood being an eternal Priesthood. Regarding the people of Israel, and their elgibility though? Seems like I remember reading in the old testament where Yahweh said that He would save Israel but NOT BY ANY COVENENT in the last days ? When you are saved by a covenent, that equates to a deal made and honored which implies the resulting promise was deserved or earned.
However Israel did not deserve or earn Yahwehs promise because they did break the covenent as you well point out in the golden calf episode.
But Yawheh is gonna save Israel ANWAYS even though their salvation is undeserved, however not all of them at once. In fact its clearly written that Judah is saved before Israel, and the reason Yahweh gave was that because Judah sinned worse than Israel did, He did not want Israel being saved first, and then thinking themselves better than Judah or supposedly righteous just because Judah had fallen further. Now as that applies to us today, as salvation then became open to all gentiles as well as to Israel, we today do not earn or deserve our salvation either, we cannot “work our way” into heaven, or get there merely by good works, we can only get there by the grace of Yahweh, and Yahshuah accepting us because we remained loyal to Him even when it becomres unpopular for us to do so.

If U read the curses for disobedience written in Deuteronomy you see there is a long list of punishments unless we repent from our rebellion against Yahweh, the last end being He said He would HATE US and we would become canibals eating our own children for lack of food if we did not repent before things got so bad that came upon us. But no Christian that remains loyal to Yahshuah the Christ our Messiah has to worry over that as long as we remain faithful unto death to His good name, because He gave us the promise that if we followed His precepts God the Heavenly Father would provide food for us, we need not worry like the heathen over what we shall be eating.

But not to digress, back to the subject of sacrifice, Yahweh said in the old testament to Israel, that He was weary of their sacrifices and feast days and was tired of bearing all their foolishness in thinking the blood of some animal made everything ok for all their continual sins. ANd my thoght is that prolly that was because once they sacrificed then they thought they were oh so righteopus and in good standing, and so felt no real compunction to repent and try to do better, Or in other woreds, the sacrificial deal turned sour becazuse it was a teaching tool only not the method whereby we find our salvation. A teaching tool that if not understood would briong people into the pharisee mindset where they thought they were oh so righteous, while of course the opposite was the real deal insofar as both Yahweh and Yahshuah were concerned and Yahshuah even tried to help them see that but they refused to listen.
And it sure looks like there are many people today that refuse to listen as well, cuz the talmudists and orthadox so called Judaic or so called messianic “Christianity” they all wanna go back to sacrificing red heifers thinking that will please Yahweh, when in fact He sent His only begotton son to do away with that business, and told everybody to pick up their own cross, rather than thinking they should kill animals and then themselves somehow by that animals blood be made righteous.
It is only by the blood of Yahshuah Jesus the Christ, and outr following in His precepts that we can ever attain to good favor with Yahweh, The Noahide laws those animal sacrificing rabbis want to enforce is what will eventually bring the wrath of Yahweh down upon themselves, because it is that very same Noahide law that they will use to persecute and kill of of the Christians that do manage to stay loyal to Jesus Christ by refusing the mark of the beast they will also undopubtedly promote by misquoting Ezekiel Chapter Nine and calling the mark of the beast, the mark of God.

  3. Yahweh’s covenant with the day and with the night was not broken on the day that Yahshuah was crucified. (Jeremiah 33:19-22) Yahshuah’s Blood is on them, and on their children. It is impossible for God to lie. (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18) Yahshuah fulfilled the Messianic prophesy at that time, (Psalms 22:2 – I cry in the daytime – and in the night season) The first day, (Memorial day, High Sabbath) of the Passover ordinance is eternal, (Exodus 12:14,17,24), and was instituted before the Levitical Priesthood. The “appointed time” of sacrifice, “beyn ha’arbayim”, always falls on the first day. Beyn ha’arbayim, (according to the Scriptures – “appointed time” of sacrifice) came a little earlier than they had expected. (Supernatural three hour period of darkness over all the land) The religious authorities, at that time, were between a Rock and a hard place. Yahshuah’s Blood is on them, and on their children. Yahshuah is the eternal Seh HaElohim. (John 1:29) It is impossible for God to lie. (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18) All Scriptural documentation provided in the free “Twilight Report”.

  4. In the picture you chose, what are the Levites on the top row doing with their hands? I find it quite interesting.
